6-Chloro-3-indolyl beta-D-galactopyranoside (Rose-gal) is a chromogenic substrate that can be used to detect beta-galactosidase activity by producing a red-coloured, non-diffuse endpoint. Its is often used together with the galactosidase inducer IPTG (linked). Rose-gal is used in conjunction with X-glucoside (link) for the simultaneous detection of GUS and lac activity (ref 1).
